The Stanley: Built the Tasmanian Way
At Bluey Merino Tasmania, we've always believed that the best stories are the ones you can trace back to the source. In an industry where most Australian wool is shipped offshore, its identity diluted and blended with lesser fibres, we've chosen a different path. As Merino specialists, we live and breathe this fibre. The Stanley Merino Overshirt is a celebration of what happens when you refuse to compromise on that purity, remaining committed to the product, the environment, and the people behind it.
A Collaboration 150 Years in the Making
To bring the Stanley to life, we partnered with the legends at Waverley Mills in Launceston. As Australia's oldest working textile mill, they understand the "tactile story" woven into every fibre. Together, we've created a fabric that is truly one-of-a-kind.
This isn't a mass-produced blend; it is 100% ethically sourced, single-origin Tasmanian Merino wool, woven right here in Launceston. It's a partnership built on shared values—quality over quantity and a deep-seated respect for local manufacturing.
Developing this specific fabric was an immense technical challenge, pushing the limits of both our premium wool and the heritage looms at the mill. Because it was so demanding to create, the Stanley is a one-of-a-kind release that may never be made again. It is a unique moment in our history as makers; gear that is designed to be with you the longest, becoming something you grow more attached to the more you wear it.
The Inspiration: Greg and the Real Deal
Every piece of gear we make has a "eureka" moment. Ours happened when we met Greg, our local handyman. When Greg found out we worked with Merino, he couldn't stop raving about his old Waverley Mills wool overshirt. He recounted painting a house on a brutal winter's day, battling fierce winds, with that overshirt being the only thing that kept him going.
A few days later, Greg showed up to see us, proudly sporting his original, paint-splattered overshirt. Seeing the wear, the history, and the sheer durability of that garment, we finally got it. For a Tassie bloke, a checked overshirt isn't just clothing—it's an essential staple you can trust. It's the Tasmanian way: if it doesn't work, you don't wear it.
Why "Stanley"?
We don't name things lightly. We took our first prototype to the town of Stanley, where the headlands bravely bear the full brunt of the Bass Strait gales. Known for its breathtaking views and fierce, unpredictable weather, it was the ultimate testing ground. The overshirt proved it was ready for anything from a tough day on the job to a relaxed weekend hangout.
More Than an Overshirt, It's a Legacy
The Stanley Merino Overshirt represents a return to the days when clothing was built to be a lifelong companion—tough enough for a Tassie gale, but refined enough for everything that comes after. By choosing the Stanley, you aren't just buying an overshirt; you are supporting local growers, weavers, and makers. You're wearing a rare piece of Tasmanian history, woven with the same grit that kept Greg warm all those years ago.
