Why Being "Perfect" is Overrated

Why Being "Perfect" is Overrated

Tired of the “Throwaway” Culture? So Are We.

At Bluey Merino Tasmania, we’re all about keeping things real. Tasmania’s rugged beauty? We love it, and we’re serious about protecting it. But here’s the thing—we quickly realised the fashion industry has this bad habit of tossing out slightly imperfect gear just because it’s not ‘perfect’ enough. Honestly, such waste never sat well with us.

So, what did we do? We started stashing away tubs of gear with tiny flaws. Nothing major, just stuff that didn’t tick the perfect box. For ages, we weren’t sure what to do with it.

The Reality Check

Australia has developed a bit of a “fast fashion” habit. We’ve officially become the world’s biggest textile consumers per capita, and the consequences are piling up—literally. Every single year, around 220,000 tonnes of clothing end up in Aussie landfills. That is an eye-watering 6,000kg of fabric tossed away every 10 minutes [1].

In the traditional fashion world, if a garment rolls off the line with a minor “birthmark”—maybe a slight stitch irregularity or a small fabric slub—it’s labelled as “deadstock.” To protect a pristine brand image, many labels choose to shred or bin these items rather than sell them. We think otherwise.

2021: The Birth of “Too Good to Waste”

Our Merino wool is selected with care, shorn with respect, and crafted with precision. We believe that a minor aesthetic flaw doesn’t mean a garment should be discarded. The thought of our gear—born from months of dedication and valuable natural resources—ending up in landfill over a skipped stitch is simply unbearable.

In 2021, we proudly launched our “Too Good to Waste” initiative, embracing transparency with our community. Rather than concealing these “seconds,” we created a dedicated space on our website to celebrate them.

Since then, we’ve been donating slightly imperfect items to various organisations that support those in need. Additionally, our “Too Good to Waste” page offers customers access to these unique pieces at remarkably low prices. While they may have minor imperfections, they still deliver the exceptional quality you expect from Bluey—just with a little extra character.

The Thrill of the Find

Because we take such immense pride in what we create, we don’t actually come across “defect” items very often. This means our “Too Good to Waste” range is often quite small—even bare at times.

Think of it a bit like your favourite local thrift shop—you never quite know what you’re going to find or when it will appear. It’s all about the thrill of the hunt. If you’re looking for a bargain, we recommend checking the page regularly; you might just score an amazing, one-of-a-kind find that was simply too good to let go to waste.

Join the Circular Movement

When you shop our “Too Good to Waste” page, you’re doing more than just snagging a bargain on premium Merino wool gear. You are making a conscious choice to:

  • Keep textiles out of Aussie landfills, reducing the burden on our local environment.
  • Respect the craftsmanship and the life of the sheep that provided the fibre.
  • Support a circular economy that values longevity over “perfection.”

A tiny stitch irregularity won’t stop you from summiting a mountain or staying warm on a cold morning—but the mounting problem of textile waste just might. By choosing “imperfect,” you’re helping us move toward a more perfect future for the planet.
